Deceased Name: Dallas cardiologist Walter Berman dies at 52
In 1970s, he founded rehabilitation clinic at Baylor University Medical Center
Walter Berman, a Dallas cardiologist and founder of the cardiac rehabilitation program at Baylor University Medical Center, died at home Sunday after a six-year battle with cancer. He was 52.
His funeral will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Temple Emanu-El, 8500 Hillcrest Road in Dallas. Burial will follow at Temple Emanu-El Cemetery, 3430 Howell St.
Born in Jackson, Miss., Dr. Berman earned a bachelor's degree in chemistry in 1970 from Vanderbilt University. He later earned a medical degree from the University of Mississippi Medical School and did his residency in internal medicine at Baylor.
He served a fellowship in cardiology at University Medical Center in Jackson but returned to Dallas in the mid-1970s and established Baylor's cardiac rehabilitation clinic. The treatment, which consisted of exercise, diet and other health--related advice, was mostly unheard of at the time, family members said.
"Back in the 1970s, there was no such thing as cardiac rehabilitation," said his wife, Imogene Berman of Dallas. "If you had a heart problem, they would just tell you to go home and take it easy. Walter thought that was crazy."
Last month, the Baylor rehabilitation program was renamed in his honor.
Dr. Berman published medical papers during his career and treated several well-known local patients, including Tex Schramm and Mickey Mantle.
Friends described Dr. Berman as a highly respected and generous physician. For 26 years, he volunteered one week annually as a staff physician at the Henry S. Jacobs Children's Camp in Utica, Miss.
"That was a very important part of his life. He loved what it stood for," said longtime family friend Susan Hart. "It teaches values and morals. He felt it was a wonderful place for kids."
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his daughters, Rachel and Dorian Berman, both of Dallas; sons Joshua, Benjamin and Matthew Berman, all of Dallas; mother, Flo Berman of Jackson, Miss.; and sister, Susan Donn of Norfolk, Va.
