- The Tai Sophia Institute, an alternative healing school in Laurel, has received a $1 million gift from the Helen M. & Annetta Himmelfarb Foundation.
Administrators call it the largest gift in the institute's history, and say the money will be used as a challenge grant to secure additional funding.
Helen M. Himmelfarb, founder of the Chevy Chase foundation, credited acupuncture and herbal medicine with improving her health, institute leaders said.
More than 300 full-time graduate students are enrolled at Tai Sophia. About 900 graduates practice acupuncture, herbal medicine and other so-called healing arts.
The institute partners with the University of Pennsylvania to offer a master's degree in integrative health to medical school and nursing students.
Acupuncture and other alternative healing methods continue to gain mainstream acceptance, according to recent surveys.
