- MILLER - Frank, M.D., F. A.C.S., On January 8, 2008 we lost a brilliant, accomplished surgeon who was a courageous, dynamic person with a zest for life and a commitment to our hospital and community. The Medical Staffs of Plainview and Syosset Hospitals mourn the passing of their friend and colleague Frank Miller, M.D. Dr. Miller was extremely instrumental in the integration of Plainview and Syosset Hospitals. He retired as Director of Surgical Services of North Shore University Hospitals at Plainview and Syosset where he was a member of the staffs from the inceptions of the hospitals. His love for the hospital was unequivocal. He was a person well regarded by his peers and by his patients, who sought his medical expertise during his 40-plus years as a practicing urologist. Dr. Miller served as an Ensign in the U.S. Naval Air Reserve and was discharged in 1951 and was decorated for heroism. He graduated from Columbia College and Albany Medical College and did his residency in Surgery and Urology at Bellevue and New York Veterans Hospital. He remained in the U.S. Naval Reserve until 1982 and again served on active duty for 2 years before opening a practice in Plainview. He served as a police surgeon for the Long Island State Parkway Police and was a member of the professional staff of Downstate Stony Brook Medical School. He served as Chairman of the professional Education Committee and was a member of the Board of Directors and later President of the American Cancer Society, Long Island Division. He received the American College of Surgeon's award for excellence in Urological Cancer Surgery. He was a fellow of the American Board of Medical Examiners, Nassau Academy of Medicine, Nassau Surgical Society, and a member of the American Urologist Association, Nassau County Medical Society, and American Kidney Foundation. He was a urological consultant to the N.Y.S. Psychiatric Hospitals and was on the attending staff of North Shore University Hospital at Manhasset. He was President of the Board of Directors of Central Recovery Systems in Plainview from 1985 to 1995 and was Chairman of the Medical Board of NSUH at Plainview in 1995. He was President of the Medical Board of Central General Hospital in Plainview in 1972 and 1980 and Syosset Hospital in 1975. Dr. Miller had a number of papers published by leading American Urological Surgical Journals and the American Cancer Society and gave many surgical lectures. In 2001 he was awarded Emeritus status at Plainview Hospital. He was a member of the Whaler's Cove Yacht Club since 1964 and the Peconic River Sportsman Club. In 1985 he participated in determining qualifications and credentialing standards of surgical personnel on numerous state committees. He was an avid collector and noted expert on antique firearms. Dr. Miller was known for his charitable benevolence and gratis medical care to those unable to pay for their medical care. Our deepest sympathy to his incredible wife Susan and children Leah, Cheryl, Steven, Peter, Scott and grandchildren Lindsay, Justin and Geena. In addition to his family he is survived by many loving friends, colleagues and hospital family.
