    • Durham - Will Grossman, age 67, died on Saturday, April 7, 2012 at Meadowlands Hospice in Hillsborough, NC, after a valiant 17-month battle with non-Hodgkins lymphoma. His family wishes to thank Dr. Louis Diehl, his medical team, and the nursing angels of 9100 and the Meadowlands, for their treatment and compassionate care.
Will was born in Czernovitz, Ukraine in 1945, the son of Holocaust survivors the late Julius and Anna Grossman. In 1958, he emigrated from Israel to Brooklyn, where he learned English around the baseball diamond and discovered a love of the arts, particularly photography. He received a BFA from Brooklyn College and an M.Ed. from North Carolina State University. During his professional career, he was the owner of Northgate Camera Center and director of operations of the Jewish Heritage Foundation of North Carolina, where he was active in promoting Jewish art at the Rosenzweig Gallery at Judea Reform Congregation. He also assisted in launching the statewide exhibit "Down Home," which featured aspects of Jewish life in North Carolina. Will was especially involved in developing educational materials for the study of Judaism in public schools, which was part of the exhibit and full-length movie that has appeared on public television.
Since moving to Durham in 1971, Will was a member of Beth El Synagogue, where he served on the Chevra Kadisha Burial Society.
Will traveled extensively and saw beauty all around him, but it was his black-and-white observational photographs of Durham in the 1970s, when it was transitioning from a sleepy tobacco town to a modern small city, that have been the subject of gallery shows and retrospectives. His Durham photographs can be viewed at the Through This Lens Gallery in downtown Durham.
Will’s greatest love has always been his family, and he spent his happiest times at the head of the table, where he presided over elaborate feasts of food, wine and wit. He will be remembered as a kind and moral man.
Will is survived by his beloved wife of 43 years, Lynne Gladstein Grossman, his children Leia Grossman, Alec Grossman and daughter-in-law Anne Wofford, Seth Grossman and fiancée Lauren Aboulafia, brother Dave Grossman, sister-in-law Peg Grossman, niece Stacie Bloom, nephew Scott Grossman, and extended family. Will’s spirit lives on in their love, compassion, and sense of humor.
A funeral service will be held Monday. April 9, 2012 at 2:00 pm in the Howerton & Bryan Funeral Chapel. Officiating will be Rabbi Daniel Greyber. Burial will follow in the Durham Hebrew Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, charitable contributions may be made to Beth El Synagogue, 1004 Watts Street, Durham, NC 27701, the Jewish Heritage Foundation of North Carolina, PO Box 51245, Durham, NC 27717, Duke Cancer Institute, Office of Development, DUMC 3828, Durham, NC 27710 , or to Duke Hospice and HomeCare, 4321 Medical Park Drive, Suite 101, Durham, CN 27704.
