Edward Friedson, 86, a Washington-area auto dealer and businessman who helped organize several educational programs for troubled and underprivileged youths, died April 21 at his home in Bethesda from complications of brain surgery.
Mr. Friedson settled in Washington in the 1940s and began his career as a salesman for a tobacco and candy company. He sold used cars for Greenway Motors from 1948 to 1952, then opened his first dealership, Colonial Pontiac, in Manassas.
He soon moved the business to Bethesda, then sold it in 1954 and opened Standard Pontiac in College Park with his business partner, Harold Himelfarb.
Mr. Friedson opened an auto financing company in 1963 that later became known as Mid-Atlantic Financing Corp. In 1975, he opened Capitol Datsun/Nissan in Washington. He sold some of his businesses before his retirement in 1998.
Mr. Friedson was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., and grew up in Miami Beach. He played football at Rollins College in Winter Park, Fla., from which he graduated in 1942. He was an underwater demolitions expert in the Marines during World War II, serving in Guam, Guadalcanal and Okinawa.
He was one of the founders of a career training program at Cedar Knolls Youth Center in Laurel, training incarcerated youths in auto mechanics. He later helped begin a similar program at the Lorton Correctional Complex. He was also the founder of a mentoring program for inner-city elementary children in Southeast Washington. The program, called Kids, provides college scholarships for students who achieve academic distinction throughout their schooling.
Mr. Friedson was a member of Adas Israel Congregation in Washington. He also was a member of the Amity Club, a social and philanthropic group, and an informal gathering of men called the Sunshine Boys.
Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Janet Himelfarb Friedson of Washington; two sons, Robert Friedson and John Friedson, both of Potomac; a brother; seven grandchildren; and one great-grandson.
