- Nathan R. Rosenthal, 79, a biochemist with the Food and Drug Administration, died of a stroke Sept. 29 at Washington Hospital Center. He lived in Olney.
Mr. Rosenthal worked on food safety and on approvals of anti-cancer drugs at the FDA from 1959 to 1990, when he retired. Before that job, he worked for the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda.
He was born in Washington and graduated from Roosevelt High School in 1944. He served in the Army's 8th Infantry in central Europe during World War II and received the Bronze Star and a Combat Infantryman's Badge. After the war, he received bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees in biochemistry from Georgetown University, the last one in 1959.
Mr. Rosenthal joined the Army Reserve as a captain in 1959 and rose to the rank of lieutenant colonel before retiring in 1978.
He was a past board member of Tifereth Israel Congregation in Washington.
Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Marjorie Broder Rosenthal of Olney; four children, Joanne Levine of Reston, Stuart Rosenthal of Olney, Barbara Ritter of Darnestown and Amy Goldstein of Norwich, Conn.; a brother, Stanley Rosenthal of Annapolis; and nine grandchildren.
