- May Ruth Seidel (nee Needle), of Cambridge, Massachusetts and formerly of Baltimore and Columbia, MD and Wellfleet, MA, passed away on June 14, 2023, at the age of 99. She is survived by two sons, Robert A. Seidel (Mary) of Baltimore and Steven M. Seidel (Adria Steinberg) of Cambridge, her brother, Howard J. Needle (Sue) of Baltimore, her grandsons, Adam Seidel (Ashley Herring) of Cambridge, and Sam Seidel (Sunanna Chand) of Oakland, CA, and her great-grandson, Lamont Herring Seidel and great-granddaughter, Janayah Chambliss, both of Cambridge. She was predeceased by her parents, Mollie and Sidney A. Needle of Baltimore, brother Alan Lee Needle of Baltimore, husband, Henry M. Seidel, M.D. of Baltimore, and a son, Stuart Seidel, of Winooski, VT.
May Ruth was dearly beloved by her family and many friends, whom she nurtured and guided with her intelligence, thoughtfulness, and extraordinary example. She was a community leader, participating in and leading community organizing on causes including (but not limited to) reproductive freedom and health, affordable housing, and equal representation for all in the communities of which she was a part. For some of this work, the Association of Community Services of Howard County named May Ruth Volunteer of the Year in 1981, the Columbia Association named her the "Columbian of the Year" in 1982 and the Howard County (Maryland) Commission for Women inducted her into its Hall of Fame in 1999.
May Ruth's ashes will be buried next to her husband's and son's ashes in Wellfleet. Celebrations of her life will be held in Baltimore, MD and Cambridge, MA at times and places to be determined. Those wishing to make contributions in her honor may make them to Planned Parenthood.
