1001 Suicide - jumped out the window of the hospital Lubsky, Katie (I471)

1002 Sun, The (Baltimore, MD) - July 16, 2004
Deceased Name: I.D. Shapiro, 88, owner of scrap iron sites, hunter
I.D. Shapiro, former president of United Iron and Metal Co. Inc. and a big-game hunter, died of complications from cancer and a stroke Wednesday at his North Baltimore home. He was 88.

Born Israel David Shapiro in Baltimore, he was raised in the city's Easterwood Park section. He was a 1933 City College graduate and earned a bachelor's degree in finance in 1937 from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania.

Mr. Shapiro joined the family scrap iron business established by his father in 1912 on Greenmount Avenue. It later moved to the 2500 block of Wilkens Ave. and had yards on South Catherine Street and Pulaski Highway.

Mr. Shapiro headed the company's M&T Division before becoming president of the company. In 1971, he introduced the first auto shredder in the state that could "fragmentize" 500 junked cars a day into grapefruit-sized pieces of metal.

He sold the business in 1990 to David T. Joseph Co. but continued until his death as president of United Holding Co. Inc., a real estate management and development firm.

He was a longtime member and former president of the Institute of Scrap Iron and Steel.

His philanthropic interests included The Associated and the endowment of the transplant surgery suite at the University of Maryland Medical Center, family members said.

A big-game hunter until he was in his 70s, Mr. Shapiro filmed hunting trips that took him to Africa, Australia, Europe, North America and the North Pole. He also enjoyed lecturing to area groups about his hunting adventures. He also had 100 animals he had shot stuffed and mounted for display in his home, family members said.

He was a former member of Woodholme Country Club and a member of Suburban Country Club, where he enjoyed golfing.

"When he was 81, he shot his age," said his daughter, Jane S. Baum of Pikesville.

Mr. Shapiro was a Mason and a member of Oheb Shalom Congregation.

He was married in 1940 to the former Miriam Melnicove, who died in 1985.

Services will be held at 3 p.m. today at Sol Levinson & Bros., 8900 Reisterstown Road, Pikesville.

In addition to his daughter, Mr. Shapiro is survived by a son, James R. Shapiro of Baltimore; two sisters, Bernice S. Levinson of Baltimore and Lorraine S. Levin of Pikesville; three grandchildren; and special friend Nancy Farmer of Baltimore.

Arthur Rogow, former president of a uniform manufacturing business, sold the Bloomfield company in 1991 but he hardly settled into a sedentary retirement.

He and Millie, his wife of 62 years, traveled extensively throughout the world, attended parties and played in bridge clubs. He was an avid golfer and tennis player until his mid-80s. And he attended regular Monday night poker games with his buddies until two weeks ago.

That's when he was hospitalized for a number of serious conditions. He knew his time was limited and his one wish was to get out of the hospital and return to his Shadyside home. He did just that on Tuesday. The next day, Mr. Rogow, died in his home surrounded by his wife and three generations of his family. He was 89.

"He was happy, contented, at peace," one of his daughters, Barbi Mendlowitz, of Oakland, said of her father's passing. And, she said, that was the way he lived his life.

"He lived life to the fullest," she said. "He had a great sense of humor, he loved people, he was interested in people. He was a very, very social outgoing person.

"He was a dear, sweet father, very conscientious about education. His family and his religion were everything to him."

Those qualities served him well as president of Joseph Rogow & Sons, which was started by his grandfather, Joseph, in 1923, and where his father, Isaac, also worked. The manufacturing company focused on serving the health care industry and flourished until it was sold.

Mr. Rogow graduated from the University of Pittsburgh in 1940 and served in World War II as a captain in the Army.

He was active in the United Jewish Federation and Rodef Shalom Temple, Shadyside.

In addition to his wife and daughter, he is survived by another daughter, Sally Rogow of San Luis Obispo, Calif.; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Services were held Friday at Rodef Shalom Temple. Interment was in Beth Shalom Cemetery.

Contributions may be made to Rodef Shalom Sisterhood or Jewish Residential Services, both at 4905 Fifth Ave., Pittsburgh 15213.

1011 The 1980 American Jewish Yearbook states that Rabbi Isadore Breslau was born in Kabilnik, Russia, on January 19, 1897. However, his military records indicate that he was born on January 20th the same year in Russia. He came to the United States in 1906. However, it is unclear when or where he met his wife, Julia. The War Department documents state that he had two children, however; reference is only found to a daughter Ruth who attended Goucher College.
Rabbi Breslau served in the United States Navy during World War I and graduated from New York University and New York State College, where he received a Bachelor of Arts degree. He continued his studies at Albany Law School and the Jewish Institute of Religion. He occupied pulpits at the Washington Heights Free Synagogue and the 82nd Street Synagogue, both in New York; Temple Israel in Waterbury, Connecticut and in Washington D.C.
He served as Director of the American Zionist Bureau for two years beginning in 1939 for the two-year duration of the Bureau’s existence. In 1939, he was also elected as an American delegate to the World Zionist Congress in Geneva. He was then appointed Executive Director of the Zionist Organization of America in 1940, a position he kept for almost two years.
Having headed the Louis D. Brandeis Zionist District of Washington for a number of years, Rabbi Breslau also served as the Chairman of the United Palestine Appeal of the Seaboard Region. He acted as Co-Chair for the United Jewish Appeal in Washington D.C. prior to his entry into and after his release from the Army. In addition, he was a member of the National United Jewish Appeal Executive and the Quota and Allocations Committee.
In 1943, he decided to re-enlist in the United States Military, this time to serve as a Chaplain and to learn more about the War effort from within. After ten months in Daytona Beach, Florida, he was assigned to the European Theater and became the first Jewish Chaplain in Berlin, Germany.
After his release from the United States Military, he served as Department Chaplain for the Department of the District of Columbia Jewish War Veterans of the United States. He continued his involvement in Jewish activities and organizations as President of the Jewish Community Council of Washington in 1953 and President of the American Association for Jewish Education, instrumental in the establishment of both.
In addition to being a Rabbi and Chaplain, Rabbi Breslau was also a very successful businessman. He and other investors founded the Mill End Shops in Washington D.C. His concern for the community led him to civic affairs and he served as the Chairman of the Bond Committee of the City of Washington.

1016 The organizational meeting of the Capital City Cocker Club was held on April 16, 1939 at the home of Dr. Charles Davis, who served as our first President from 1939 to 1943. The club was organized to protect and further the interest of the Cocker Spaniel and the name “Capital City Cocker Club” was selected as being most appropriate. The Club held its first Specialty Match at the Silver Spring Armory in September 1939 with 135 entries. In August 1940, the meetings were moved to the Hearing Room of the Montgomery County, Maryland County Building and the Club's Certificate of Incorporation was issued in the District of Columbia on August 30, 1940. It was signed by members Harry Lustine (Treasurer), Philip Rosenfeld (Secretary) and Dr. Chas. R. Davis (President). Since then, numerous moves in the meeting place have been made to accommodate the changing membership with most meetings being conducted in members' homes. Lustine, Harry (I1427)

1017 The Tai Sophia Institute, an alternative healing school in Laurel, has received a $1 million gift from the Helen M. & Annetta Himmelfarb Foundation.

Administrators call it the largest gift in the institute's history, and say the money will be used as a challenge grant to secure additional funding.

Helen M. Himmelfarb, founder of the Chevy Chase foundation, credited acupuncture and herbal medicine with improving her health, institute leaders said.

More than 300 full-time graduate students are enrolled at Tai Sophia. About 900 graduates practice acupuncture, herbal medicine and other so-called healing arts.

The institute partners with the University of Pennsylvania to offer a master's degree in integrative health to medical school and nursing students.

Acupuncture and other alternative healing methods continue to gain mainstream acceptance, according to recent surveys.
