- Although Dr. Lewis W. Gumerman spent a year in an iron lung after being afflicted with polio, he was able to return to school and receive his medical degree.
"It happened in 1955, when Dad was in his second year at the University of Pennsylvania Medical School," said his daughter, Meira Gumerman. "But for Dad, even the thought of not finishing medical school was never an option."
Dr. Gumerman, of Squirrel Hill, a radiologist and chairman of the Nuclear Medicine Department at UPMC Presbyterian hospital, Oakland, died of a heart attack on Tuesday, May 4, 2004, at his home. He was 69.
"My father, despite the fact that his legs were paralyzed, completed medical school in 1960," his daughter said. "Dad interned in nuclear radiology at the Albert Einstein Hospital in Philadelphia before coming to Pittsburgh in 1962."
A year later, he met Ruth Krast, a resident of New Wilmington, Del., at a wedding where her father, a rabbi, was officiating. They were married a short time later.
Ruth Gumerman, a private therapist, was active with Pittsburgh Action Against Rape. She died in 1997. Two years later, Dr. Gumerman married Myriam Kantz, a preschool teacher.
Born and raised in Philadelphia, Dr. Gumerman was one of two children of Albert and Anna Gumerman. His father was employed as an accountant in the retail industry.
At age 16, Dr. Gumerman completed high school and entered the University of Pennsylvania, where he received his undergraduate degree.
Meira and her brother, Etan, said their father never complained or lost his faith. "As kids we were aware that Dad was using a wheelchair. He had such a positive attitude. The only thing my father regretted was not being able to dance or to hold someone close to him," his daughter said.
When he began to show symptoms of his polio, Dr. Gumerman retired in 1987 and enrolled in classes at the University of Pittsburgh and the Jewish Education Institute in Squirrel Hill.
As a member of both Beth Shalom and Dor Hadas congregations, Dr. Gumerman conducted study groups and classes on religion and the faith.
"I feel what pleased our family the most about our father's medical career were the comments from his patients. They considered him not only to be a talented doctor, but a kind, patient and sympathetic man," his daughter said.
Dr. Gumerman is survived by his wife, Myriam Kantz Gumerman; daughter, Meira Gumerman, of Squirrel Hill; son, Etan Gumerman and his wife, Julie, of San Jose, Calif.; three stepdaughters, Karen Kantz, of Squirrel Hill, and Lisa and Rachel Kantz, both of Israel; and two grandchildren, Noam and Jayden Gumerman.
He was predeceased by a sister, Estelle Bleiman.
Friends may meet at noon today at Ralph Schugar Chapel Inc., 5509 Centre Ave., Shadyside, and then proceed to Homewood Cemetery, Squirrel Hill, for graveside services at 1 p.m.
