- Edward N. Tucker passed away on Wednesday, October 16, 2024 at the age of 83. He is survived by his bride of 52 years, Barbara Tucker; his loving son Matt Tucker; loving daughter and son-in-law, Lauren Tucker Freedman and Benjamin Freedman; and adored grandchildren, Felix and Sally Tucker; loving brother and sister-in-law, Michael Tucker and Jill Eikenberry Tucker. He was predeceased by his parents Henry and Helen Tucker.
Ed was a lifelong resident of Baltimore. He attended Forest Park High School and graduated from the University of Maryland. While attending the University, he answered an ad in the paper that Lester Ellin placed looking for a self-starting Junior Accountant. Thus began the creation of Ellin & Tucker, which Lester and Ed grew from a small accounting practice into a nationally recognized accounting firm. Their commitment to the clients they served and to their community exists to this today.
Ed's commitment to his community spread far and wide. As a graduate of the Greater Baltimore Committee Leadership Program, Ed served on mayoral and gubernatorial commissions on various city issues.
Ed served on many boards, usually as Treasurer. He served on the boards of Res Musica, the Handel Choir of Baltimore, the Har Sinai Congregation, the Suburban Club of Maryland, and the Gilman School, where he also served as President of the Parents' Association. As President of the Baltimore Zoological Society from 1980 - 1982, he advocated for the transfer from city control to the non-profit Maryland Zoo which exists today.
Ed also volunteered his talents to the American Bar Association from 2001-2017, first serving on the Accreditation Committee Section of Legal Education and Admissions to the Bar from 2001-2007, then as the Public Member on the Section of Legal Education and Admissions to the Bar from 2008-2017. In 2017, he was honored with the Robert J. Kutak Award "for his significant contributions to the collaboration of the Academy, the Bench, and the Bar." He was extremely proud of his work and his contributions to Legal Education in America.
Ed also was the public member for the Association for Accreditation for Human Research Protection Programs (AAHRPP). While serving on the board from 2013-2021, he also acted as Treasurer of the organization. He was always aware of the need for protection for those who volunteer for clinical trials around the world.
Ed loved spending time with family and friends both here and in Mexico. He fell in love with the country and its culture. He loved sharing his home in Zihuatanejo and invited all he knew to come and visit. His particular joy was sitting at his bar with a glass of tequila while looking at the ocean and smoking his cigar.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in his memory may be sent to the Maryland Zoo at Marylandzoo.org. The contributions will be designated for a future project in the Main Valley of the Zoo. Contributions may also be made to a charity of your choice.
Services at Sol Levinson's Chapel, 8900 Reisterstown Road, Pikesville, MD 21208, on Tuesday, October 22nd, 2024, at 12:00 pm. The family will be in mourning at 11 Slade Ave, Apt 816, Pikesville, Maryland 21208, Tuesday following the funeral with an evening service at 6 pm, and Wednesday from 1pm to 5pm.
