- Anton James Sean Keating, a colorful criminal defense attorney whose courtroom career spanned more than four decades, died of cancer June 16 at Gilchrist Care Towson. He was 82.
“I had the privilege of presiding over several trials where Anton defended people accused of a crime,” said Judge Stuart R. Berger, who sits on the Appellate Court of Maryland. “He was always prepared and he had an uncanny ability to truly connect with jurors who loved his accent and the gentlemanly way he conducted himself in the courtroom. He was supremely intelligent and was the consummate zealous advocate for his clients.”
Born in London during World War II, he was the son of Charles “Chaz” Keating, an engineer and boxer, and his wife, Margaret “Peggy” Keating.
“He was evacuated when the block in Battersea where they were living was bombed,” his daughter, Erin Keating, said. “A fireman carried his mother, him and a brother down a ladder. It was an experience that shaped his lifelong appetite for a good story and an even better fight.”
